1. Project Overview
This project aimed to enhance the aesthetic environment of the city by displaying public artworks around Shibuya Station created by artists selected through open submissions. It also supported startup companies in the cultural sector.
2. Background and Challenges
The theme of the public art project ENLIGHTEN was environmental beautification. Shibuya has always been a trendsetting hub for culture and art, and in recent years it has become a gathering place not only for artists but also for startups. Yet despite its high foot traffic, certain areas within the district suffer from graffiti and other anti-social issues, giving them a dirty, dark, and even frightening image.
By harnessing the cutting-edge technology and innovative ideas possessed by startups and artists, we will transform Shibuya into a place that thrills and excites visitors.
3. Implementation
The space beneath the second-floor connecting passageway at Shibuya Mark City, the pillars of the pedestrian crossing linking Hachiko Square at Shibuya Station with Mark City, and the temporary fencing surrounding Shibuya's ongoing construction works has been made available for the display of artwork.
4. Findings and Implications
The pilot demonstrated that displaying art 1) in areas around stations where graffiti is particularly prominent, and 2) on sterile construction walls, effectively beautifies the environment. As an example of artists and start-up companies utilizing public space, it contributed to enhancing the city's appeal through public art.
The insights gained from this project are expected to be applied to future institutional design and area management strategies, both within Shibuya and beyond.
